Wrinkles

Wrinkles are part of the natural ageing process. They naturally develop as we age from squinting, frowning and other facial expressions that cause the muscles contract. Wrinkles fall into two categories: fine, surface lines and deeper furrows.

As we age the collagen and elastin levels in our skin become depleted and this results in reduced elasticity. Meaning the older we get the less our skin is able to ‘bounce back’ and the lines that show when we make a facial expression become ingrained even when the muscles are relaxed.

Lifestyle factors can also affect the rate of development of these lines, such as smoking, excessive sun exposure, pollution and nutrition. Wrinkles mainly appear on the parts of the body that get the most sun exposure, including the face, neck and the backs of the hands.

The best way to postpone the appearance of these lines is to wear daily sun protection (minimum factor 30) to prevent UV damage, drink plenty of water, avoid smoking, and practise good skin care at home using products containing active ingredients.

Advances in the aesthetic industry mean there is an extensive range of treatments available these days to combat lines and wrinkles without the need for surgery.
